"SLIPPIN' JIMMY
WITH A LAW DEGREE
IS LIKE A CHIMP WITH A MACHINE GUN"
— What they said about me
I proved them wrong.
From Slippin' Jimmy to Saul Goodman
Started as "Slippin' Jimmy" in Cicero, running small-time cons with my partner Marco. The streets taught me more about human nature than any law book ever could. Every scam, every hustle - they were survival lessons in a world that didn't care about people like us.
My brother Chuck gave me a chance at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill - in the mailroom. While delivering mail by day, I studied law at night at the University of American Samoa. "Go Land Crabs!" It wasn't Harvard, but I earned every single credit through sheer determination.
Passed the bar exam on my third try. My brother Chuck, a brilliant lawyer I admired, secretly blocked my path at HHM at every turn. The person I respected most never believed in me. That changed everything.
Became a public defender in Albuquerque, representing clients no one else wanted. Found purpose defending the forgotten, the overlooked, the ones the system had already written off. Each case was personal - these were real people who deserved a fighting chance.
Opened my own practice focusing on elder law and wills. Operating out of the back of a nail salon, I fought for seniors who'd been taken advantage of by nursing homes and corporate greed. Sandpiper Crossing case proved the little guy could take on giants.
Represented Tuco Salamanca and got him a reduced sentence. That opened doors to a world I never imagined - the criminal underworld. Learned that criminal law wasn't about guilt or innocence, it was about knowing the game and playing it better than anyone else.
The Kettlemans taught me a valuable lesson: everyone's guilty of something. They chose HHM over me, but that case showed me there was a whole market of clients who needed a lawyer willing to think outside the box.
My relationship with Kim Wexler, the most brilliant lawyer I've ever known, pushed me to be better. We were partners in every sense - in law, in schemes, in dreams. She saw the good in Jimmy McGill, even when I couldn't see it myself.
Discovered my brother Chuck had been sabotaging me all along. His "electromagnetic hypersensitivity" was real to him, but his lack of faith in me was even more real. At the Bar hearing, he said "You're Slippin' Jimmy with a law degree, like a chimp with a machine gun." He was right, but not in the way he thought.
Lost my law license for a year after breaking into Chuck's house. Worked at CC Mobile selling phones to criminals, which ironically became my best networking opportunity. Learned that being a lawyer wasn't just about the license - it was about understanding what people really needed.
After Chuck's death and my reinstatement, I realized James McGill was holding me back. I legally changed my name to Saul Goodman - a play on "S'all good, man!" It wasn't running away from Jimmy; it was becoming who I was always meant to be. Bright suits, flashy commercials, and a commitment to defending anyone who needed it.
Became THE criminal lawyer in Albuquerque. Not a lawyer who handles criminal cases - a *criminal* lawyer. From DUIs to drug dealers, from money laundering to RICO cases, I knew every loophole, every precedent, every judge's weak spot. My office on Juan Tabo Boulevard became synonymous with getting results.
Represented Lalo Salamanca in his murder case. Got him bail in what seemed impossible. That night in the desert, when I thought I'd die, I learned that this life had real consequences. But I also learned I could talk my way out of anything. "Tell them Lalo sent you."
Built a thriving practice defending Albuquerque's criminal element. Connected clients with my associate Mike Ehrmantraut for "security consultations." Learned the real power wasn't in the courtroom - it was in knowing everyone, everything, and exactly which strings to pull.
Met a high school chemistry teacher who'd gotten into the meth business. Walter White was smart, desperate, and in over his head. I became his lawyer, his consigliere, his connection to the criminal world. "Better Call Saul" became his lifeline and his warning.
When Walter's empire crumbled, I knew my time in Albuquerque was up. Called Ed the "disappearer" with my vacuum card. One last phone call, one last look at my office, and Saul Goodman vanished into the night. Destination: Omaha, Nebraska. New identity: Gene Takavic, Cinnabon manager.
Back in Albuquerque. Saul Goodman & Associates - still fighting for the little guy, still finding the angles others miss, still believing everyone deserves representation. Because in the end, the law isn't about what's right or wrong. It's about knowing the rules well enough to make them work for you. Justice matters, but so does winning.
